What Are UTM Parameters?
UTM parameters are tracking tags added to the end of a URL to identify where website traffic comes from and which campaign, channel, or link generated the visit. Also called UTM tags, they pass campaign information into analytics and attribution tools.
For example, an email newsletter, LinkedIn advertisement, and partner website may all direct users to the same landing page. UTM parameters separate those visits so marketers can compare traffic, conversions, pipeline, and revenue by source.
What Are the Five UTM Parameters?
UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module. Marketers commonly use five UTM parameters:
| UTM parameter | What it identifies |
| utm_source | The platform, publisher, or traffic source |
| utm_medium | The channel type, such as email, CPC, or paid social |
| utm_campaign | The specific campaign or promotion |
| utm_content | The creative, advertisement, link, or CTA variation |
| utm_term | A paid search keyword or targeting term |
A tagged URL might show that a visitor came from a paid LinkedIn campaign rather than an organic social post. This information helps analytics platforms organize campaign traffic and connect visits with later conversion events.
UTM parameters do not track users by themselves. They label the link that brought the visitor to the website, allowing marketing teams to analyze performance more accurately.
What Are the Best Practices for UTM Parameters?
Consistency is the most important UTM best practice. Teams should use standard values for sources, mediums, campaigns, and creative variations so the same traffic is not divided across several labels.
For example, using linkedin, LinkedIn, and li as separate source values can fragment reporting. Lowercase formatting, consistent separators, and concise naming make campaign data easier to compare.
Marketers should also avoid placing UTM parameters on internal website links. Internal tagging can replace the original campaign source and make attribution data less reliable.
Before launching a campaign, check that the destination URL works, every required parameter is present, and old tags have not been copied accidentally. Teams managing many campaigns should establish a documented UTM governance and naming system to keep tracking consistent as channels and contributors increase.
Clean UTM parameters support more reliable campaign reporting, conversion analysis, and marketing attribution. However, they are only one part of measurement and must be combined with accurate conversion events and revenue data.
